Yes there was such a thing as FILTERS in the Darkroom: FroFilmProject

If you have ever wondered how did we get more contrasty black and white prints back in the day, the simple answer is we used filters. I had a set of 6x6 Ilford Gel Filters that went above the negative in the enlarger.

Each filter would determine how much contrast in image would have. Would it be a grey and flat image or would it be a really poppy black and white.

The filters ranged from 00 to 5 with 00 being the most flat at 5 being the most contrasty.
I personally started with the 3 1/2 filter and decided from there if I needed more boomification.
