The panAFRICA Project | Lou Jones
For the last few years the Lou Jones studio has been traveling to Africa and photographing the fifty four independent countries, country by country. However they are taking a very different approach; rather than highlighting the negative viewpoints that western media places on the continent of poverty, pestilence and conflict, they are documenting normal contemporary life. In this new kind of photojournalism they try to dispel the spurious myths that people think about Africa and concentrate on the billion citizens who go to work every day, raise their children, and make innovations within industry, education, culture, medicine, business, sports, and agriculture.
Jones also photographs the traditional aspects of the parallel exotic cultures and tribes, and rural areas that are often the only images seen by western media because they exist in parallel with modern society. He seeks out local institutions and people who can point them toward what is important and unique about each country rather than relying on NGOs or FBOs that have their own agendas. They have to do research on each place, develop relationships to gain access to places, organizations and interiors that are usually not of interest to tourists and journalists trying to win prizes exposing the troubles. In addition to the photography itself, Jones and his staff have to do fundraising with crowdfunding, grants and personal philanthropy to finance each trip and to develop the educational curriculums, information and their interactive web presence.
