A photographer's success depends on more than just creating great images. While having a good portfolio is an important step in the right direction, there are several other variables that will help you excel in your career. Learning how to present your photographs to a commercial gallery, magazine editor, not-for-profit artist's space, or museums is paramount in getting exposure. Knowing what grants, fellowships, and artist's residencies are available is your key to finding valuable resources. And utilizing the most readily available resource, the Internet, is one of the most critical tools in advancing your career, thus increasing your chance of getting published. To learn more about these techniques and methods for success, join the Center for Photography at Woodstock's executive director, Ariel Shanberg, for an inspiring two-hour tour of the art world.
Shanberg brings over 10 years of experience working with emerging artists at CPW which was founded in 1977 and is dedicated to supporting artists working in photography and related media and engaging audiences through opportunities in which creation, discovery, and education are made possible. Since its inception, CPW has worked to bring forth new voices, bold ideas, and foster dialogue in and through photography and related media with offerings that include exhibitions, workshops, lectures, workspace residencies for artists of color, publication, and fellowships. Over its 33-year history, CPW has served as a groundbreaking step in the careers of photographers who have gone on to gain major gallery representation and inclusion in prestigious museum collections, get published in renowned photography publications, receive significant grant awards, and more. In 2010 the Lucie Foundation honored the Center for Photography at Woodstock with the Spotlight Award for having significantly altered the landscape of photography. Previous recipients include Magnum Photo Agency, the W. Eugene Smith Foundation, and Visa Pour lImage.
This special condensed version of CPW's annual professional development workshop is perfect for committed photographers who have developed a body of work to bring into the world, but aren't sure where and how to begin. By spending time with Ariel, you will learn about a range of venues, publications, and opportunities that are out there waiting to be approached. You will leave this session inspired to hit the real world, with more confidence and a map for your professional journey.
