John Dunnigan is a Fine Art photographer from Baltimore who's journey into the world of photography has allowed him to create some beautiful evocative concepts. We are excited to Feature his work and gain a little insight into how he makes his art.
I've always been interested in photography, ever since I was a boy. I didn't start taking it seriously until about 4 or 5 years ago, though. Earlier in my life I took what could be considered the "normal" path... Meaning college (undergraduate as well as graduate) and then regular job after regular job (by the way, I still have a "regular" job). Somehow, though, it seemed that I was always called back to exploring my creativity, whether it was acting, writing, drawing or painting. At some point, I'm not really sure how, I began to explore photography again. Since I am such a visual person it just seemed to fit.
Most of my work (I concentrate on fashion, boudoir, and fine art female) involves women. Women to me, as far back as I can remember, are the most beautiful of all of God's creations. I enjoy capturing that beauty, that wonder, while admittedly attempting to invoke emotion in some of my work. I love working as a team, whether it be just myself and the model, or a team that includes makeup artists, hairstylists and/or designers. The collaboration with other creatives can be terribly invigorating. Currently, I find myself moving more and more toward the fine art side of expression, but with a mix of fashion.
Sometimes it will start with just an object or piece of clothing that I build ideas around. Other times it might be an idea that just comes to me, or a suggestion from a model, makeup artist or designer. Then I add pieces to the puzzle. I'm constantly looking through magazines (both print and online) for inspiration. I also really enjoy creating my own sets, to the point where I turn my apartment into a tiny stage. There are many times when ideas strike me during a shoot... I'll have a general idea beforehand, but it'll grow once we start shooting and exploring.
