Actually it doesnt cost them less to make it slimmer, only more simple and less to repair or upgrade, the superdrive was a repair disaster.
the reason is the fan sucked air thru the skeletal DVD assy. and onto the laser lens.
Apple didnt want a TRAY loader in their systems.
the Panasonic (Apple NEVER MADE burners) "superdrives" are incredibly reliable. ........VERY FEW FAIL, ........dust on the lens is not a technical failure.
