I used to be guilty of taking to tight of a headshot to often. Of course every once in a while a tight headshot can make sense but do it to often and it starts to get old.

It's just as important to capture the scene that a subject is in as it is to capture their portrait. In this case we have tight photos of animals. Most animals lack any kind of emotion in their face. Sure there are certain ones who look happy or sad or contemplative. But more often then not a tight headshot of an animal doesn't offer to much.

One thing you can do is try to show the animals surroundings in a way that adds interest to the image. Mix in a tight shot here and there but it's important to show its surroundings.
